DEBATE TIME 15.1 Dissertation Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
DEBATE TIME 15.1 - Dissertation Example in particular, along with other developing and developed nations. The third scenario talks about the economic development with respect to the healthcare industry. It has been seen that the healthcare sector has proved to be one of the most booming sector in the present and in the near future and contributes about 10% of the GDP in an average. Finally, the fourth scenario talks about healthcare as shared vision. The paper ends through providing a set of recommendation along with conclusion with respect to the future of healthcare sectors. Contents Abstract 2 Introduction 4 Scenario 1 5 Business As usual 5 Scenario 2 6 Hard Times/ Government Pressure 6 Scenario 3 8 Healthcare as an economic development Issue 8 Scenario 4 9 Healthcare as shared vision 9 Conclusion 10 Recommendation 11 References 12 Introduction Healthcare organizations are generally divided into three groups which depend on the financial sponsorship that includes profit, non profit and governmental organization (Goldsmi th, 2005, p. 39). The dynamics of the healthcare sector are both attractive and challenging. In the 21st Century, healthcare industry is the fastest growing sector with a market value of over trillion dollars. However, with changing global environment it has been noted that the healthcare sector has been quite slow in adapting to the new techniques and technologies. Delivering better and efficient healthcare services have become a challenge in the 21st century for the healthcare sector (Comstech, 2011). Thus, with respect to the growth of the healthcare sector, the concept of healthcare marketing is also at a rise. Healthcare marketing can be defined as the process which helps in understanding the needs as well as the wants of the target market. The main purpose is to provide point of view through which organization would integrate, analyze, plan, implement and control the healthcare system (Cooper, 1994, p. 9). The health industry in the year 2012 has been predicted to connect in m any different ways with its consumers and wade through the regulatory, economic and also political uncertainty. It is one of the most pressing issues across the world. While regulatory reform, partnership of public and private sector, and technological challenges are just some of the concerned issues, the ageing population, chronic illness and cost control are some of the other major issues revolving round the healthcare industry (PWC, 2012). Scenario 1 Business As usual Healthcare policy tends to vacillate between the profit making sector and intervention from the government. The high cost of healthcare policies still remains unaltered. But it has been regarded that healthcare business is no longer a ââ¬Å"business as usualâ⬠(Stewart, 2012). This is because business as usual is not a good option for the healthcare anymore. The high cost in the healthcare is mostly hurting the businesses as well as the families in need. Thus it becomes necessary for organizations to introduce health insurance at an affordable price without denying the patients and caring for the patients to the level they need. The reason behind the high price of health insurance policies is not the lack of competition among the insurance companies but the high price charged by the systems itself. An example to support this statement can be found in an investigation carried out by Massachusetts Attorney General which revealed that most of the large hospitals as well as group of physicians tend to

Investigate their human resources, administration, finance and sales Essay Example for Free
Investigate their human resources, administration, finance and sales Essay Marks and Spencers have many different store departments but also have many different departments of their business, its functional areas. I am going to look at and investigate their human resources, administration, finance and sales and marketing departments to then see how each contributes to the running of Marks and Spencers. Human Resources: The human resources department aims to carry out 5 major things, these being: 1. Recruiting, keeping and dismissing employees. This is a major task for MS as they need the right type of employees for the business to operate its best, also the employees shall decide the businesses success present and future. Recruiting new employees could be hiring new people from outside the business or promoting workers already working in the business. Many businesses such as MS like recruiting from outside the business to bring new ideas and enthusiasm. MS would want to keep all their existing employees as they would risk losing experienced and trained staff, plus recruiting new workers and training them can prove to be expensive. Sometimes MS would have to dismiss or sack employees, this may be due if an employee cannot carry out their job efficiently or effectively. Also many employees are dismissed or made redundant, as their jobs no longer exist, say the fall in a particular product could lead to the dismissal of many staff. Read more:Ã Human Resource Management Essay 2. Monitoring and providing good working conditions. Working conditions includes; the cleanliness of a place, the provision of rest areas, hours of work and holidays. Working conditions have a great impact on how well a business operates and how well employees can carry out their work. They are normally a subject for negotiation between trade unions and human resources. MS have an area for staff to relax and spend their breaks in. The whole store would be regularly cleaned every day for both the workers and customers. 3. Training, developing and promoting employees. Human resources need their staff to be able to ensure that employees are able to do their jobs, they may give training at MS or through course at local colleges, planning jobs so that employees enjoy new experiences and develop new skills also promoting employees to more senior positions to give the business the skills and experience it needs. 4. Negotiating with trade unions. The human resources department of MS would have to discuss and agree pay and working conditions with trade unions or other representatives of the workforce. This process is called collective bargaining. 5. Health and safety is an important responsibility for human resources, as it requires MS to provide all employees with a secure risk free working environment. That is what the human resources function of MS had to ensure is carried out. Here are some typical job titles within an organisation such as MS. Job title Description Human resources director Deciding the overall staffing policies of Boots. Also he/she advise senior management. Setting the human resources budget. The finance department of a business manages the money for the business. The department controls the financial transactions of a business and help managers to plan for the future. The various activities of the finance department are: 1. Recording all the financial matters of MS as they are constantly spending money or receiving it from sales. It is vital that they keep all records of all the activities in order to, calculate whether the business is being profitable, asses how much tax the business will have to pay and to help managers to make the right decisions. 2. All businesses have to prepare their accounts in order to summarise their financial affairs during a year, plcs are required to publish their results legally as they are a public company such as MS. They have to do the following; the balance sheet which states both what a businesses aims and its debts, profit and loss account- which records the profit or loss made during a lengthy period of time usually a year, the inland revenue have to confirm that MS has paid the correct amount of tax, suppliers are able to see whether business can pay its debts and finally shareholders can decide whether its worth investing in the business or not. 3. MS have to pay the wages of all their employees and it involves the finance department in a number of ways. The business has to deduct income tax and national insurance from each employees pay, it may be required to operate a pension scheme for its more elderly employees and to make sure the correct amount of wages or salaries has been given out to employees. 4. All businesses need some resources and capital to trade successfully. To purchase these resources businesses may need to raise large sums of money, known as capital, but not MS as they are already fully developed and expanding across the globe. But nevertheless a business has 2 main sources of capital; a loan raised by borrowing money from a bank or another business and retained profits, if MS has been very profitable they may be able to invest in the business and obtain resources they may need. Administration: The administration department provides important support services to other departments in the business. Not all admin departments in all businesses are the same. In small businesses the admin department may take responsibility for human resources or finance, but in a large organisation such as MS it is usually most likely to be specialised. The admin department makes considerable use of computers and IT as it is required for a lot of their jobs. There are as always many activities for the administration department; they can be broken down into 5 groups: 1. Clerical services are the main role of every admin department. The department may provide clerical services to all other departments within the business. These maybe; word-processing, making telephone calls, booking accommodation for staff, sorting and delivering incoming mail and posting outgoing mail, organising meetings and keeping records of what takes place at these meetings, talking responsibly on behalf of the whole company and creating and keeping records of the company. 2. All businesses require regular cleaning MS is no exception as it is especially true as MS have cafes, which require thorough cleanliness. Admin also organises the maintenance of the building, they may decorate the inside and outside of the building if they wish. 3. Health and safety is a big issue with all businesses. It includes; providing safety clothing, warnings for workers, ensuring that there are no dangers around the workplace and providing regular medical checks for those working in risky environments. 4. Security is an increasingly important issue for all businesses, security duties would include; signing visitors in and out of premises, ensuring that unauthorised people are kept out by use of patrols or even guard dogs, protecting computer systems from hackers, patrolling to prevent shoplifting by employing guards in uniform. 5. Information technology is being more widely used by the minute, nearly all businesses use some form of IT nowadays. The admin department may use IT to; make spreadsheet for financial data, a database of customers and employees, payroll systems to calculate employees wages and salaries, e mail for communicating internal and external, web based systems, web sites for selling goods etc. Typical job roles of the administration function would be: Job Description Administration manager Managing the administration operations of MS. Marketing is the process that helps all businesses to discover and meet the needs of customers. Doing market research, carrying it out in the local and wider community enables the business to discover: 1 Customer reactions to existing products 2 What new goods and services customers want 3 Whether or not new products will prove to be popular 4 The prices customers are prepared to pay for goods 5 How satisfied customers already are with the service Marks and Spencers therefore do the following; discover customer needs through market research, advise customers of products through promotion then achieve their sales. Social Darwinism: Herbert Spencer and The Catholic Church Essay
Herbert Spencer was the most important Social Darwinist of the 19th Century. He was the first to begin thinking about evolutionist long before Darwin came out with his book on the "Origins of Species". He had many theories such as that everything evolves from one basic creature and then breaks off into more diverse species (Haberman (Hab.), 171). His theory was that social, political, and intellectual movements were caused by the development from the homogeneous to the heterogeneous. Spencer once stated, "If the advance of man towards greater heterogeneity is traceable to the production of many effects by one cause, still more clearly may the advance of society towards greater heterogeneity be so explained" (Haberman 2 (Hab2)) Spencer believed that governments should not try to change social environment, for it would hamper with processes of nature and individual liberty (Hab). He had a theory that evil would disappear if "every man may claim the fullest liberty to exercise his faculties"(Hab). Although this would onl...

Individual Assignment: Vulnerable Population Article Essay
Based on my understanding of what I have read over the past week, I would define a vulnerable population as any individual or group of people with a decreased capacity to communicate effectively in a given setting. The term vulnerable populations is be defined as ââ¬Å"people with questionable capacity.â⬠It is further stated that, ââ¬Å"children, comatose patients, fetuses, prisoners, or mentally ill patients, among othersâ⬠are considered vulnerable populations (Miracle, 2010). As a clinical research nurse, it is my responsibility to ensure that all of my patients (or subjects) submit a signed and dated informed consent (IC) form prior to enrollment in a study. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires that all clinical trials or study sponsors (pharmaceutical manufacturer of the study drug) maintain proof of IC for each subject, in every trial, without exception in their respective trial master file (TMF). Potential barriers for participants in clinical research studies might be patients or subjects who are uneducated, and or, patients who are not able to assure his or her health care provider that they fully understand information that is provided, and IC may not be obtained. The NIH defines consent capacity as an ââ¬Å"adultââ¬â¢s ability to understand information relevant to making an informed, voluntary decision to participate in research.â⬠This information includes a description of the study, its potential risks and benefits, the right to give voluntary consent, the right to withdraw from the study, anonymity, confidentiality, and ways to lessen any risks. However, many people do not understand these components of an informed consent for a variety of reasons. These include people with ââ¬Å"mental disorders, neurological disorders such as stroke or dementia, metabolic impairment, psychoactive medications, substance abuse, and head trauma.â⬠Others who may be unable to provide consent include children, fetuses, prisoners, the terminally ill, and pregnant women (Miracle, 2010). Most of my experience with vulnerable groups, while working as a clinical research nurse, has been with young women who became during the study period, after IC was obtained. Generally speaking, pregnancy should be avoided at all costs during participation in a clinical trial in which a woman is ingesting a study drug. Depending on study design or how a studyââ¬â¢s protocol is written, it may require that the women participants not get pregnant for a specified period after study drug is completed, in order to avoid harm to the woman and her unborn fetus. When a patient becomes pregnant during the study drug period or within the specified period after study drug completion, the study sponsor) is required to report this as an adverse event (any untoward and/or unexpected event during the clinical trial that could potentially harm the patient). The patient must then be followed by her trial physician throughout her pregnancy, and through the babyââ¬â¢s first year of life, to ensure the health of both mom and baby for one year after study completion. If any complications arise, the sponsor is responsible for all necessary care. Reference Miracle, V. A. (2010). Vulnerable Populations in Research. Dimensions of Critical Care Nursing , 242-245.

Why Do People Like Scarry Movies
For years people have been scared by horror movies and they continue going back. Alfred Hitchcock once said, ââ¬Å"drama is life with the dull bits left out. â⬠Why do people like to watch other people get hurt and die while being scared enough to make them jerk in their seat? Movie goers like horror movies because people in general have dull lives. Males just use it as a opportunity to get close to their partner, while females like to get scared while in the presence of their ââ¬Å"man. â⬠Every day people simply get up, go to work, and come home for supper before going back to bed. People believe that their lives are boring. That is why horror movies are popular. Movie goers like to be able to see blood, guts, fingers and toes, while having the ability to simply walk away. People in general want to have suspense in their lives but want to be able to turn it off. As for men, they like to be frightened as well as women, but most of all men like the sex appeal of horror movies. Almost every horror movie made in the last 20 years has a young attractive female actor running around mindlessly. If men were not attracted to this, then producers obviously wouldnââ¬â¢t make movies this way. Men would also rather take their partner with them to see these kinds of movies. Men know their ââ¬Å"female friendâ⬠will want to cuddle up! Women on the other hand want to have the fear factor but want their partner to be by their side. Most women movie goers will NOT watch a horror film alone. They want to feel the protection of their ââ¬Å"man. â⬠It allows them to be scared while feeling secure at the same time. Men of course donââ¬â¢t mind this at all. They planned on it! Most horror movies are made for the viewing age of 17 ââ¬â 30. The people in this age group still enjoy going out on the weekends to get away from the pressures of school and work. Horror movies give excitement and suspense in the lives of movie goers. It presents trust between partners when the girl jumps in her seat and clenches the arm of her boyfriend. It makes men feel strong as if they are protecting their partner. Horror movies allow movie goers to have a little bit of the real world while knowing they can go home and rest comfortably in their own bed.

John Dos Passoss Manhattan Transfer Essay Example
John Dos Passoss Manhattan Transfer Essay Example John Dos Passoss Manhattan Transfer Paper John Dos Passoss Manhattan Transfer Paper Both F. Scott Fitzgeralds Great Gatsby and John Dos Passoss Manhattan Transfer contain significant criticisms on American society but they present and explore this in different ways. Manhattan Transfer is comprised of snapshots of life, it has three sections and in the first one we are introduced to at least twenty characters. It does not focus on any one specific life or subject. The Great Gatsby is a continuing story of the lives of a small group of upper class Americans and their part in society. Not only is it interesting to consider the ways that the two writers differ in their approach to criticising society, it is interesting to examine the affects that these different styles have on the reader. One of the main themes that are prevalent in both stories is the criticism of societys obsession with wealth and status. Fitzgerald explores this theme through the unfolding of the lives of his characters and their attitudes towards each other. We are told that Daisy refuses to marry J. Gatsby despite being in love with him, [He] was poor and she was tired of waiting. Instead she marries Tom Buchanan, A man full of pomp and circumstance who could afford to give her a string of pearls valued at three hundred and fifty thousand dollars the day before her wedding. Through getting to know Daisy we discover that this choice has led her to having a very bad time and being trapped in an unhappy marriage with an unfaithful husband. Daisy says of her daughter that she hopes she is a fool implying that the fact that she used her head when making a decision for marriage has not given her happiness. Despite her words at the end of the novel Daisy makes the decision to stay with Tom even after the love affair with Gatsby has been rekindled. It is clear that Tom can offer her the status that Gatsby never can, he is an aristocrat that belongs in fashionable East Egg, whereas Gatsby, however much money he makes cannot escape the fact that he will always be viewed by upper class society as Mr Nobody from Nowhere. Dos Passos shows societies importance of wealth in more brief observational ways, there are instances of characters forfeiting love in order to form relationships for money and status again. Relationships in this story appear to be more business like than for love, we see Emile whos headed to the city in pursuit of wealth attach himself to Madame Rigaud a business owner under the guise of love. Ellen sees marriage also as a way in which to better herself financially, her comments on marriage relay that love is not her main concern and other characters in the story comment on this, Why that girld marry a trollycar if she thought she could get anything by it. A notable difference of the two novels is the familiarity of the characters, While the criticism of Fitzgerald stems from the unhappiness that can be brought about by placing wealth over love, Dos Passos shows us far less consequences but many more examples of the willingness of people to enter a relationship for money and status. We almost read of the relationships as business deals as apposed to examining the inner workings of a relationship. The result of this technique is one of shock for the reader of the cold-hearted money driven nature of society. Both Manhattan Transfer and the Great Gatsby comment on the weight given to appearance in New York society. Right from the opening of Manhattan Transfer the reader is presented with how vital it is to look the part in order to succeed. The only job seeking advice given to Bud is to go and git a shave and a haircut and brush the hey seeds out o yer suit abit before you start lookin' because its looks that count in this city. Appearance is also of great importance in The Great Gatsby when playing the role of an upper class citizen.

Definition and Use of Strikethrough
Definition and Use of Strikethrough A strikethrough is a horizontal line drawn through text, used to indicate the deletion of an error or the removal of text in a draft. If your work is edited or proofed professionally on paper, understanding common revision and editing symbols and abbreviations will help you process the suggested changes. Strikethroughs are used to recommend the deletion of material in traditional editing processes. In modern social-media contexts, a strikethrough thats shown is sometimes used ironically. In some technical contexts, the history of document changes, including struck passages, serves a valuable public purpose. Conventional Uses of Strikethroughs In document editing, both by hand and through computer-aided editing, a strikethrough conveys the editors intent that the material in question ought to be deleted. A strikethrough is a basic copyediting symbol; in ink-on-paper proofreading, a strikethrough is accompanied by a loop at the end of the line to signify deletion. Editing using the track-changes feature in Microsoft Word, by contrast, indicates the deletion through the use of a red strikethrough. When you revise the document using Words reviewing tools, youll either accept or reject the proposed deletion. If you accept it, the struck text vanishes; if you reject it, the strikethrough vanishes and the text remains as-is.Ã When you encounter strikethroughs in documents that display in black, it suggests that someone intends an edit but isnt using the Track Changes feature. Public Use Cases for Strikethroughs Beyond the one-to-one document editing, the strikethrough can serve as a public record of changes, reflecting who made what revision at what time. The use of sophisticated version-control systems like Git, Subversion, or Mercurial allow people to change a document (usually with symbols that resemble a Track Changes project, including strikethroughs), but each change is captured with a version record that can be viewed over time. For example, Washington, D.C. publishes city laws using a service called Github. Anyone can view the districts complete set of regulations, including noting what changes were made at specific dates. One author proposed a minor typographic tweak to the districts online laws - a change that the D.C. legal administrator accepted. Not many municipalities, let alone other governmental agencies or public corporations, publish their official documents in this manner, but if more people did, it might enhance transparency and public engagement. Alternative Uses of Strikethroughs Online communication sometimes uses these strikethroughs to communicate, usually with intended humorous irony, that the non-stricken language is official and the text with a strike-through represents the writers genuine, unfiltered opinion. In this context, the strikethrough isnt actually a proofreading symbol, but rather a line through the text. In Microsoft Word or Microsoft Outlook, you can apply a strikethrough (or a double-strikethrough) effect on text without invoking any sort of editing tools. You can even color it red to mimic a track-changes edit. This alternative use of strike-through text: Is intended to be viewedReflects an opinion that shouldnt be expressed using that wordingCan sometimes lightly veil an insultHas nothing to do with document editing Youll see this alternative approach most often in blog postings and social media, where the implied snark is more accepted than it might be in formal business contexts.

Issue Summary - Geneva Conventions POW Treatment
Issue Summary - Geneva Conventions POW Treatment The Geneva Conventions (1949) and the two Additional Protocols (1977) form the foundation for international humanitarian law in times of war. The treaty focuses on the treatment of enemy forces as well as civilians living in occupied territories. These international treaties are intended to limit the barbarity of war by protecting non-combatants- civilians, medics and aid workers- and combatants who are no longer able to take part in battle- wounded, sick and shipwrecked troops, and all persons held as prisoners of war. The Conventions and their Protocols provide measures for preventing all violations and contain strict rules for dealing with the perpetrators of war crime atrocities known in the treaties as ââ¬Å"grave breaches.â⬠Under these rules, war criminals are to be investigated, sought, extradited if necessary, and tried, regardless of their nationality.à History and Background of Limiting War As long as there has been armed conflict, man has tried to devise ways to limit wartime behavior, from the sixth century BCE Chinese warrior Sun Tzu to the 19th century American Civil War. The founder of the International Red Cross, Henri Dunant, inspired the first Geneva Convention, which was designed to protect the sick and wounded. Pioneer nurse Clara Barton was instrumental in U.S. ratification of that First Convention in 1882. Subsequent conventions addressed asphyxiating gases, expanding bullets, the treatment of prisoners of war, and treatment of civilians. Nearly 200 countries- including the United States- are signatory nations and have ratified these Conventions. Treatment of Combatants, Civilians, and Terrorists The treaties were initially written with state-sponsored military conflicts in mind and emphasize that combatants must be clearly distinguishable from civilians. Combatants who fall within the guidelines and who become prisoners of war must be treated humanely. According to the International Red Cross: Captured combatants and civilians who find themselves under the authority of the adverse party are entitled to respect for their lives, their dignity, their personal rights and their political, religious and other convictions. They must be protected against all acts of violence or reprisal. They are entitled to exchange news with their families and receive aid. They must enjoy basic judicial guarantees. Enemy Combatant Habeas Corpus Under these rules, captured enemy combatants, whether soldiers or saboteurs, may be detained for the duration of hostilities. They need not be guilty of anything; they are detained simply by virtue of their status as enemy combatants in war. The challenge in wars like those Afghanistan and Iraq is determining which persons who have been captured are terrorists and which are innocent civilians. The Geneva Conventions protect civilians from being tortured, raped or enslaved as well as from being subjected to attacks. However, Geneva Conventions also protect the uncharged terrorist, noting that anyone who has been captured is entitled to protection until their status has been determined by a competent tribunal. Military lawyers (Judge Advocate Generals Corps - JAG) reportedly have petitioned the Bush Administration for prisoner protection for two years- long before Iraqs Abu Ghraib prison became a household word around the world. Supreme Court Ruling The Bush Administration held hundreds of people at the Guantanamo Bay naval base on Cuba, for two years or longer, without charge and without redress. Many were subjected to actions that have been characterized as abuse or torture. In June 2004, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that habeas corpus applies to detainees at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, as well as to citizen enemy combatants held in continental U.S. facilities. Therefore, according to the Court, these detainees have the right to file a petition asking that a court determine if they are being held lawfully.

Dream Surrealist vs. Automatist Surrealist Essay
Dream Surrealist vs. Automatist Surrealist - Essay Example The essay "Dream Surrealist vs. Automatist Surrealist" discusses Automatist Surrealist and Dream Surrealist. From this era, artists and intellectuals both would increasingly use modern methods to explore the psyche and express its contents, seeking new forms and modalities of expression to accomplish the goal. Where dada sought to embrace the irrational and elevate it to a de facto cosmic principle, this is also recognition of the final deterioration of medieval systems of thought and the birth of the modern individual in Europe and internationally. As the avante garde artists of this movement, Andrà © Masson and Salvador Dali represent two aspects of early Surrealism, differentiated by their methodology of inquiry into the content of the mind and its expression into two factions, the dream surrealists and the automatist surrealists. Massonââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Automatic Drawingâ⬠of 1924 is paradigmatic of the automatist school which used artistic methods based in illogic and chanc e to override the conscious aspects of both mind and artistic expression to search for self-discovery and universalism in the imagery of the subconscious and unconscious states of mind. To do so they often practiced automatic drawing in order to conjure these images out of the deeper states of consciousness by overriding the processes of the ego and the senses. In this manner, the surrealists based their art on an early form of Western depth psychology. The dream surrealists shared Freudââ¬â¢s infatuation with the symbolism of dreams and dream interpretation. and sought to express the imagery of dreams in their artwork. Yet, unlike the automatists, the dream surrealists did not seek to overcome the traditional use of the ego in painting, but rather to use the ego to express the language of dreams, a subtle difference that can be seen through comparing Massonââ¬â¢s work to one of Salvador Daliââ¬â¢s first dream surrealist paintings, ââ¬Å"Inaugural Goose Fleshâ⬠(1928) . In 1924, Salvador Daliââ¬â¢s artwork was still very much exhibiting the influences of Cubism and of the Greek-Italian surrealist Giorgio de Chirico. Daliââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Still Lifeâ⬠(1924) and ââ¬Å"Port Alguerâ⬠(1924) both show the influence of Picasso and early Cubism, as well as Daliââ¬â¢s early experimentation with different styles such as Impressionism, reflected in the waters of the sea in contrast to the cubist architecture. (ArtMight, 2011) Yet, in ââ¬Å"Still Lifeâ⬠(1924), the ââ¬Å"metaphysical planeâ⬠introduced by de Chirico is beginning to be shown in his painting, fully evident four years later when Dali paints, ââ¬Å"Inaugural Goose Fleshâ⬠(1928). This ââ¬Å"metaphysical planeâ⬠is different than the traditional perspective of portrait, still life, or natural painting. What it does is replace the horizon and relation between earth and sky which dominates representational painting with an infinite horizon upon which anythi ng can arise, representing the plane of mind and the world of dreams. In de Chiricoââ¬â¢s early work, the viewer has the unspoken understanding through the use of light on an artificial, imaginary, and infinite horizon, that the events or scene depicted is a dream image. 4 assignments - Essay Example Inclusion needs to be early on, there could hardly be any argument against it. Being special doesnââ¬â¢t mean they need to be out into nursing care like facility and they need pampering. Special children also have fighting spirit and they can adapt themselves up to amazing levels. Administrators and authorities need to capitalize on this. Bernie got included early on and it helped him and the children around him to adapt, who didnââ¬â¢t think it was a big deal, they didnââ¬â¢t consider Bernie and alien. They just took it like a normal thing and naturally got used to him. Some habits developed in earlier stages of life are always better. Bernie also points out how important ââ¬Ëearly inclusionââ¬â¢ is not just for the adaptation maneuver but for honing and developing academic skills of the person. Bernie deems it a great thing that happened to him because he felt more comfortable with the academics. He got hold of the complex things early on. Special children also develop their brain and they need to exercise it with various challenges. Otherwise just like any other person, their brain would turn into mush. And when they will be ââ¬Ëincludedââ¬â¢ later on in their life, they will probably not be able to cope with the new challenges with the dexterity and confidence that an ââ¬Ëearly includeââ¬â¢ will. Many times during the interview, Bernie refers to ââ¬Ëother kidsââ¬â¢. For instance he says that what it felt like to be the ââ¬Ëother kidââ¬â¢ what challenges they were facing and where Bernie stood in his achievements. This gave him a sense of heightened urgency that he needs to catch up with them, but under his own terms. This shouldnââ¬â¢t be confusing. To prove my point, here is the idea in plain words; special children cannot compete with ââ¬Ëotherââ¬â¢ children on the same level. Expecting them to be as good as others would be just a dream (I do wish it would come true). However, when Bernie was with other kids, Bernie became more realistic of his abilities and

Sociology - Essay Example However, this can also be seen in the use of economic sanctions before the Iraq war, as Joy Gordon described in ââ¬Å"Cool war: Economic sanctions as a weapon of mass destructionâ⬠(Gordon, 2002) While it is easy to see the destructive power of war as it impacts a country like Iraq economically through the destruction of resources, it should be noted that even the victorious power in a war may suffer economic consequences, such as the U.S. following WWII or Iraq. This is because of the great social cost of war production and mobilization; funds that could have been put to productive use in society instead were wasted and destroyed through bombs and war. The New York Times in 2009 described the total cost of the Iraq War at $860 billion USD, and though this may have helped military contractors it may have also reduced the ability of the country to grow economically through the effects of the redistribution and large-scale waste of resources. (Glanz, 2009) War itself may cause mi llions of deaths in a society. People who were once producers culturally may see economic destruction that takes years to rebuild. Examples in Asia show how landmines such as were used in Laos and Cambodia can disfigure populations for years, creating disabilities. Similarly, populations suffering wars in Africa have suffered mass-disfigurement through machete attacks and other weapons that leave people scared and disfigured, both physically and psychologically. These psychological forces can further reduce economic development following a war out of feelings of grief, depression, or loss that are felt in the victims. Question 2: what is the economic role of transnational corporations in integrating global economy? Multinational corporations currently play a role in developing economies and labour forces in the global economy, and their trading patterns furthers social integration internationally through the exchange of products and ideas. Dicken (1992) writes in ââ¬Å"Global Shift ,â⬠ââ¬Å"The dominance of the industrialised countriesââ¬â¢ markets is not as overwhelming as commonly perceived and the market potential of the developing and transition countries is becoming more impressive. The IMF defines as transition economy as an economy transitioning from a centrally planned economic system towards a free market system.â⬠(Dicken, 2003) Dicken defines the modern economy as being related to over $54 trillion USD in economic activity. He notes that since the industrial revolution, the MNC or Multi-National Company has risen to represent the driving force of economic expansion internationally. These companies have the capital resources to build new factories, offices, and large production facilities that oftentimes developing nations or the small business owners in a society cannot manage. One reason for this is the ease through which MNCs can receive large financing through banks and corporate bonds. The other reason is more fundamental, in that rational management standards lead to an efficiency of operations, a specialization of labour, and the pursuit of profit in ever more scientific ways. MNCs drive technological expansion and innovation both through research and development in new products and also the introduction of these products into new markets. They can also promote jobs internationally by exploiting lower cost labour in

What It Takes to Be a Volunteer Article Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
What It Takes to Be a Volunteer - Article Example I thoroughly enjoyed the experience because it made me feel special as I was able to impart that special feel within the lives of the people themselves. I found out that by doing good, the conscience gains quite a great deal of satisfaction as it is something that makes me feel satisfied with who I am and what I want to give back to the society in more ways than one. The socio-economic development that took place in Haiti during this time was immense. I learned quite a few aspects related to the socio-economic development domains as these have been very dear to me now. I found out that I can grow my capacity building domains as these had the power to find new pathways and thus translate success into a language of its own in the most basic sense. More than anything else, I aspire to seek my own success through the steps that I undertook and which I plan on taking in the coming times as well, and not just remain limited to the Haiti experience in the sheerest sense. The socio-economic development in times of peace and security are therefore some of the more significant pointers that I will derive from the entire experience of being a volunteer in Haiti. It gave me immense satisfaction to know that I belonged amongst the people who could do something or the other for the people who were in distress and who required a hand at the end of the day, no matter how small the effort turned out to be (Kelloway, 2001). I am of the opinion that some possible ways of encouraging volunteerism are through finding pathways through which the related individuals are contacted so that they can give their best towards the societal domains. This will help them shape up in a better manner than they ought to be without the volunteering role coming to the fore.

Organization Balanced Scorecard Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Organization Balanced Scorecard - Assignment Example re is revenue growth by proposing income generating projects, operation on the profit growth and ensuring determining the short term solvency of the company. These objectives are in line with the vision of the company as they ensure which is offering low prices to the consumers. The company makes sure that it capitalizes on the large market by selling its products at lower prices. The need for a balanced scorecard in order to determine whether the company is headed in the right direction in terms of profitability cannot be understated. Therefore, this is done by measuring each objective in the financial sector with a quantified target metric that is associated with it. This process has helped companies understand their position and the weak and strong areas in the organization. In this way, the priority of the objectives can be understood in the organization and therefore, it becomes easier for the management to understand which objective should be implemented first based on its impo rtance. Further, it shows how the different sectors of the company are performing in relation to the vision and the mission of the company. Traditionally most federal agencies measure their managerial presentation by mainly focusing on internal process performances; they also looked at factors such as the number of full time equals that were allotted. However, on the other hand the private sector has always focused on the monetary procedures as their bottom line; this includes return on investment, earnings per share and even market share. It is imperative to understand that alone, neither of the approaches can be able to give stipulation for the full viewpoint of an organizationââ¬â¢s routine. However, by ensuring that there is a balance that exists between the internal process as well as results from financial measures, managers can be able to have a complete picture as to whether the company should be able to make improvements. For this reason, the balanced score card was used as it

Posthumus and Innogene Essay Example for Free
Posthumus and Innogene Essay The following passage is from Shakespeareââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËCymbelineââ¬â¢ Act 4 Scene 2. In the quoted lines Innogen identifies Clotens to be Posthumus due to Posthumusââ¬â¢ garment worn by Clotens. Innogen looks at Clotensââ¬â¢ body and his garments and says ââ¬Å"I know the shape of`s leg; this is his handâ⬠. According to her, his foot is ââ¬ËMercurialââ¬â¢ and thighs ââ¬Å"Marcialââ¬â¢. From the first act the audience is accustomed to see a chaste Innogen who is attracted only to her husband, Postumus. However in this passage Innogene is made to speak admiring words about Clotens which is ironic to the audience. Her instant decision based on the garment is a kind of an amusement to the audience who is aware of the identity of the corpse. Innogene believes that she know Posthumus well enough to identify him without the head or the ââ¬Ëjovial faceââ¬â¢. The audience may expect better judgment from Innogene who till then did show good judgment in choosing Postumus to Clotens. This passage shows that Postumus and Clotens were more similar looking than Innogene would want to believe. These similarities are mentioned by Clotens in ââ¬Å"I mean, the lines of my body are as well drawn as his;â⬠in Act 4, Scene 1(9-10). She tries to see some logical reason for the gruesome murder of her husband. The first possibility that comes to her mind is Pisanioââ¬â¢s involvement. She suspects him to have revealed the details about Posthumous to Clotens. Everyone except Innogene knows that Pisanio has got nothing to do with this murder. Moreover Innogene is unable to think logically, for, if Pisanio was the culprit he may not have helped and sent her in pursuit of Posthumus. She concludes that Pisanio has joined with Clotens to kill Posthumus. In the passage Innogene call Clotens, ââ¬Å"irregulous devil Clotensâ⬠. Clotens is interested in marrying Innogen. When he found out that this was not possible because she chose to be the wife of Posthumus, Clotens decided to murder Posthumus and rape her. He goes to the wilderness in search of Posthumous with pure hatred in his heart. Nevertheless he wears Posthumusââ¬â¢ garments while seeking out Posthumus and Innogene. This is ironic that he chose to wear the dress of his opponent in subduing him. He may have thought this would be a nice way to torture Innogene with the thoughts of her dead husband when he uses force on her. This may heighten the misery. This however goes a long way to show the cruel nature of Clotens. On the other hand the audience sees that Posthumus is aggrieved for ordering the death of his wife. He is repentant and tries to seek his own punishment by surrendering as a Roman soldier in to the hand of British troops. During the battle he takes the side of his motherland and protects it from the enemy attack, fulfilling the duty of the son of the soil. Deception in costume plays its part here again when he dresses as an Englishman and fights with Iachimo. Posthumus and Clotens are two opposite forces juxtaposed to bring out their contrasting natures to intensify the final good over evil concept. However Innogenesââ¬â¢ misunderstanding in identifying the corpse is the climax of this parallelism. This is an important scene in this play due to the death of Clotens and his misidentification as Postumous. Clotens has been the shadow of Posthumus throughout the play. At every mention of Posthumus there is a direct comparison drawn with Clotens as both are interested in noble Innogene. Death of Clotens signifies the death of evil and victory of good. However at this stage not all threads in the play are brought to a conclusive end. Moreover the difference between both is so strong that it needs to have a lingering effect for some time until alls well. Hence this scene is a good device to conclude the play in a progressive gradation.

Types Of Substitution Reactions Biology Essay
Types Of Substitution Reactions Biology Essay In a substitution reaction, a functional group in a particular chemical compound is replaced by another group .In organic chemistry, the electrophilic and nucleophilic substitution reactions are of main importance. Organic substitution reactions are classified into depending on whether the reagent that brings about the substitution is considered an electrophile or a nucleophile, whether a reactive intermediate involved in the reaction is a carbocation, a carbanion or a free radical or whether the substrate is aliphatic or aromatic. A reaction can be made faster or slower by taking into consideration the temperature and the solvent we are using.A good example of a substitution reaction is the photochemical chlorination of methane forming methyl chloride. Nucleophilic substitution What is a nucleophile Nucleophilic substitution happens when the reagent is a nucleophile, which means the attacking species is a nucleus loving species .it is itself negatively charged or has a lone pair. Such species get attracted to positive or electron deficient carbon centres.. A nucleophile reacts with an aliphatic substrate in a nucleophilic aliphatic substitution reaction. These substitutions can be of two dofferent mechanisms: unimolecular nucleophilic substitution (SN1) and bimolecular nucleophilic substitution (SN2). The SN1 mechanism has two steps. In the first step, the leaving group leaves, forming a carbocation. In the second step, the nucleophilic species attacks the carbocation and forms a sigma bond. This mechanism can result in either inversion or retention of configuration. An SN2 reaction has just one step. The attack of the reagent and the expulsion of the leaving group occurs simultaneously. This mechanism always results in inversion of configuration. When the substrate is an aromatic compound the reaction type is nucleophilic aromatic substitution. Electrophilic substitutions What is an electrophile An electrophile is a electron loving species, it itself is positively charged and wants to stabilize itself by making a sigma bond with the electron rich carbon centre. Electrophiles are involved in electrophilic substitution reactions and particularly in electrophilic aromatic substitutions. SN1 REACTION The SN1 reaction is a substitution reaction. SN means nucleophilic substitution and the 1 represents the fact that the rate-determining step is unimolecular . Carbocation intermediate is formed in this reaction .It is seen that tertiary carbocations are very stable due to + I effect and thus go for SN1 Reaction. With primary alkyl halides, the alternative SN2 reaction occurs. As primary Alkyl Halides mostly Form primary carbocation which is very unstable and thus have to go through SN2 Substitution reaction. Mechanism An example of a reaction taking place with an SN1 reaction mechanism is the hydrolysis of tert-butyl bromide with water forming tert-butyl alcohol: This SN1 reaction takes place in three steps: Formation of a tert-butyl carbocation by separation of a leaving group (a bromide anion) from the carbon atom: this step is slow and reversible. Nucleophilic attack: the carbocation reacts with the nucleophile. If the nucleophile is a neutral molecule (i.e. a solvent) a third step is required to complete the reaction. When the solvent is water, the intermediate is an oxonium ion. This reaction step is fast. Deprotonation: Removal of a proton on the protonated nucleophile by water acting as a base forming the alcohol and a hydronium ion. This reaction step is fast. WHY THIS REACTION OCCURS Bulky atoms(methyl, ethyl) surrounding the carbon atoms mostly allow SNI reaction. As the bulky alkyl halides are attached to the central carbon atom,it is both stabilized by hyperconjugation and +In ductive effect. The SN1 mechanism therefore dominates in reactions at tertiary alkyl centers and is further observed at secondary alkyl centers in the presence of weak nucleophiles. SN2 REACTION The SN2 reaction (also known as bimolecular nucleophilic substitution or as backside attack) is a type of nucleophilic substitution, where a lone pair from a nucleophile attacks an electron deficient electrophilic center and bonds to it, expelling another group called a leaving group. Thus the incoming group replaces the leaving group in one step. Since two reacting species are involved in the slow, rate-determining step of the reaction, this leads to the name bimolecular nucleophilic substitution, or SN2. Among inorganic chemists, the SN2 reaction is often known as the interchange mechanism. REACTION MECHANISM The reaction most often occurs at an aliphatic sp3 carbon center with an electronegative, stable leaving group attached to it X frequently a halide atom. The breaking of the C-X bond and the formation of the new C-Nu bond occur simultaneously to form a transition state in which the carbon under nucleophilic attack is pentacoordinate, and approximately sp2 hybridised. The nucleophile attacks the carbon at 180 to the leaving group, since this provides the best overlap between the nucleophiles lone pair and the C-X s* antibonding orbital. The leaving group is then pushed off the opposite side and the product is formed. If the substrate under nucleophilic attack is chiral, this can lead, although not necessarily, to an inversion of stereochemistry, called the Walden inversion. SN2 reaction of bromoethane with hydroxide ion. The products are ethanol and a bromide ion. In an example of the SN2 reaction, the attack of OH- (the nucleophile) on a bromoethane (the electrophile) results in ethanol, with bromide ejected as the leaving group. SN2 attack occurs if the backside route of attack is not sterically hindered by substituents on the substrate. Therefore this mechanism usually occurs at an unhindered primary carbon centre. If there is steric crowding on the substrate near the leaving group, such as at a tertiary carbon centre, the substitution will involve an SN1 rather than an SN2 mechanism, (an SN1 would also be more likely in this case because a sufficiently stable carbocation intermediary could be formed.) In coordination chemistry, associative substitution proceeds via a similar mechanism as SN2. FACTORS AFFECTING REACTION 1) The Basicity of the Leaving Group. By comparing the relative SN2 reaction rates of compounds with atoms in the same periodic group (the halides, for example), results show that the ability as a leaving group during an SN2 reaction depends on its basicity. In general, the weaker the basicity of a group, the greater its leaving ability. For example, the iodide ion is a very weak base and because it is so, it is the most reactive. Weak bases do not hold their electrons tightly, making it easier for their bonds to be broken. In contrast, the fluoride ion is a stronger base than the other halides and, therefore, the least reactive. In fact, the fluoride ion is such a strong base that compounds involving them essentially do not undergo SN2 reaction. Looking at the periodic table, relative basicity decreases down a group. (Stronger Base) F- > Cl- > Br- > I- (Weaker Base) 2) The Size of the Nucleophile. How readily a compound attacks an electron-deficient atom also affects an SN2 reaction. As a rule, a negatively charged species (e.g. OH -) are better nucleophiles than neutral species (e.g. H2O, water). There is a direct relationship between basicity and nucleophilicity: stronger bases are better nucleophiles. Acidity, the ability of an atom to give up a proton (H+), is comparatively relative in molecules whose attacking atoms are approximately the same in size, the weakest going toward the left side of the periodic table. If hydrogen were attached to second-row elements of the periodic table, the resulting compounds would have the following relative acidities: (Weaker Acid) NH3 If each of these acids were to give up a hydrogen, the result would be its conjugate base, and the relative strengths will reverse. The stronger base now moves toward the left side of the periodic table. (Stronger Base) -NH2 > HO- > F- (Weaker Base) Elements increase in size down the periodic table. Although basicity decreases down the periodic table, nucleophilicity increases as size increases depending on the solvent used. 3) Solvent. If a reaction is carried out in a protic solvent, whose molecules have a hydrogen bonded to an oxygen or to a nitrogen, the larger atom is a better nucleophile in an SN2 reaction. In other words, the weaker base is the better nucleophile in a protic solvent. For example, the iodide ion is better than a fluoride ion as a nucleophile. However, if the reaction is carried out in an aprotic solvent, whose molecules do not have hydrogen bonded to an oxygen or to a nitrogen, then the stronger base is the better nucleophile. In this case, the fluoride ion is better than the iodide ion as a nucleophile. 4) Sterics. Steric hindrance is any effect of a compound due to the size and/or arrangement of its substituent groups. Steric effects affect nucleophilicity but does not affect base strength. A bulky nucleophile, such as a tert-butoxide ion with its specific arrangement of methyl groups, is a poorer nucleophile than an ethoxide ion with a straighter chain of carbons, even though tert-butoxide is a stronger base.

Civil Disobedience in Famous Literature Essay -- Plato Socrates Philos
Civil Disobedience in Famous Literature A society or a people cannot let a government lead them blindly. With misrepresentation comes a whole new form of unjustness. The strong are the ones who do not give into demands placed upon them if they do not agree; those who refuse to conform to society; those who stick to their beliefs, no matter the cost. In many cases, those people are the ones who practice civil disobedience. Martin Luther King, Henry Thoreau, Socratesâ⬠¦ All advocated that they should not be denied their freedom, and all were considered disobedient. The government rules itself not by appealing to manââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"sense, intellectual or moral, but only through his body, his senses. It is not armed with superior wit or honesty, but with superior physical strength.â⬠(Thoreau) At a certain point, government does nothing but put fear upon its subjects, so that they would rather obey the law than risk the consequence of not. Such an example in seen in Sophocleââ¬â¢s renowned play, Antigone. In the story, Ismene portrays the role of a submissive sister, whoââ¬â¢s obedience to law blinds he...

Causes and Solutions to Pronunciation Problems
Causes and solutions to pronunciation problems12008815x , So Hee Kim Hong kong is one of the most preferred locations for international business in Asia Pacific, and is becoming more so. Naturally business English skills is becoming increasingly important. Business English skills can be categorized into three different parts. These parts are writing, presentation and communication. All are equally important, but this essay will focus more on commuicaition. To be be more specific, it will focus on pronunciation. For, when I first came to hongkong, I realized that peopleââ¬â¢s grammer and vocabulary is quiet good, but it is sometimes hard to understand them because of their pronunciation. Because relatively other aspects are quite good, I think that hong kong can increase their competitiveness in business English by focusing on this aspect. So, the following will cover the objective of the essay, the causes for the inaccurate pronunciation and the solutions. The objective is to look into how hong kong people can achieve an ââ¬Ëacceptableââ¬â¢ pronunciation. An acceptable pronunciation is ââ¬Ë a pronunciation when other people can understand what he/she says and the speakerââ¬â¢s English is pleasant to listen to; in other words, the speaker is comfortably intelligible. ââ¬â¢ (James,2010) To be short, the pronunciation doesnââ¬â¢t have to be like a native speaker but just have to be understood comfortably. There are few factors that leads to the problem of pronunciation in hong kong, despite the early age the children start to learn English. One is the influence of their mother tongue. And the other is the way how pronunciation is taught in schools. Candice, 2006) There are lots of studies that proves that the first language have a profound affect on learning the second language (Carter,2001). In hong kong, their first language is Cantonese. And there are differences in phonology between Cantonese and English. First, unlike English, Cantonese is logographic. Because they learn their mother tongue in a logographic method, they might apply the same way when learning English. That is, they may learn apply visual recognition method when learning English words rather than applying the phonetic analysis method. And this can decrease the ability to link letters and phonemes, which can affect their pronunciation. Also there are differences in the languages syllable structure, sound inventory and prosodic patterns. (Catherine,2002) But the more pressing problem is the insignificant emphasis placed on pronunciation teaching. For these kinds of problems can be overcome with a good system. First, teachers should clarify the differences between English and Cantonese phonological systems. In a study, a research(Candice,2006) was conducted to students of hong kong to find out where the most frequent pronunciation errors occur and the reason behind this. The research showed that most of these problems occurred, because the students did not h ave a clear idea of the differences between the two sound systems. For example, the /l/ sound in Cantonese cannot be found in a word-final position. So most of the students in the research had a tendency to not spell out the /l/ when pronouncing ââ¬Ëwillââ¬â¢. Learning phonics in an appropriate method is also important.Phonics is teaching reading by training beginners to associate letters with their sound values. By learning phonics students will be able to read and pronounce properly. Recently in primary schools in hong kong, phonics has become a major component of the English language curriculum. But there still seems to be a lot of limitation concerning this. The most pressing problem regarding this issue, is that the knowledge base for teaching phonics is not established. So the teachers will have to work on finding a clear methodology for teaching phonics in secondary language contexts. For example, in a study the researcher suggested adopting awareness raising activities for phonics learning. (paul,2008) This means increasing studentââ¬â¢s awareness to the general sensitivity to sound-spelling correspondence. This will increase their ability to notice and deduce the specific relationships themselves. This will lead to better performance of students in sounding out a new word from itââ¬â¢s spelling or spelling a word from itââ¬â¢s pronunciation. Also, teachers should make use of todayââ¬â¢s technology. For example, there are so many good computer program for learning English pronunciation these days. The strong point of using computer software is that it allows student to repeatedly listen to what they want, and help them to learn at anytime, anywhere. And by motivating them to use these systems in their daily lives, they can help students develop independency in learning pronunciation. Pronunciations in English is important, in peopleââ¬â¢s daily lives and also in business society. Poor pronunciation can have a negative impression and also create prejudice against the person. saylor) So, in order to have a good communication skills in the business world, having an ââ¬Ëacceptableââ¬â¢ pronunciation is a necessity. The main cause for pronunciation problems in hongkong can be found in the huge difference between their mother tounge and English. But by applying an effective English education system it is not a problem that could not be overcome.. As international business in increasing in hong kong, overcoming this weak point will have great effect on the nationââ¬â¢s competitiveness as the center for global businesses.References. 1. http://www. ehow. com/about_6636066_importance-english-pronunciation. html 2. Studying History Is a Waste of Time
Studying history is a waste of time because it prevents us from focusing on the challenges of the present. People live in this present. They plan for and worry about the future. History, however, is the study of the past. Given all the demands that press in from living in the present and anticipating what is yet to come, the speaker concludes that studying history is a waste of time because it distracts us from current challenges. However, I do not agree with this opinion because history is essential to individuals and our society. In the first place, history helps us understand people and societies. It offers a storehouse of information about how people and societies behave. Understanding the operations of people and societies is difficult, though a number of disciplines make the attempt. An exclusive reliance on current data would needlessly handicap our efforts. How can we evaluate war if the nation is at peaceââ¬âunless we use historical materials? How can we understand genius, the influence of technological innovation, or the role that beliefs play in shaping family life, if we donââ¬â¢t use what we know about experiences in the past? Some social scientists attempt to formulate laws or theories about human behavior. But even these resources depend on historical information, except for limited, often artificial cases in which experiments can be devised to determine how people act. Major aspects of a societyââ¬â¢s operation, like mass election, missionary activities, or military alliance, cannot be set up as precise experiments. Consequently, history must serve, however imperfectly, as our laboratory, and data from the past must be served as our most vital evidence in the unavoidable quest to figure out why our complex species behave as it does in societal settings. This fundamentally, is why we cannot stay away from history: it offers the only extensive evidential base for the contemplation and analysis of how societies function, and people need to have some sense of how societies function simply to run their lives. The second reason history is inescapable as a subject of serious study follows closely on the first. The past causes the present, and so the future. Any time we try to know why something happenedââ¬âwhether a shift in political party dominance in the American Congress, a major change in the teenage suicide rate, or a war in Iraq ââ¬â we have to look for factors that took shape earlier. Sometimes, fairly recent history will suffice to explain a major development, but often we need to look further back to identify the causes of change. Only through studying history can we grasp how things change; only through history can we begin to comprehend the factors that cause change; and only through history can we understand what elements of an institution or a society persist despite change.

The Total Patient Care Model of Nursing Delivery Research Paper
The Total Patient Care Model of Nursing Delivery - Research Paper Example The paper tells that models of nursing care constitute the procedures and structural representations that illustrate the flow of the health care operations. Models of nursing care support high-quality services that patients receive in the healthcare centers. Models of patient care provide nurses with theories about people, health, patientsââ¬â¢ environment, and the role of the nurse in the treatment process. The availability of various models allows nurses to select the care model that best reflects the area of their work and the group in which the client is suited. According to Mueller & Savik, the models of patient care are necessary because they help nurses to plan patient-care services; proper planning is the critical element of ensuring quality and efficiency in the care process. Models of patient care enhance the way in which nurses assess and deliver treatment services to patients. The patient-care models may involve costs and time; despite this, novice nurses to develop th eir own patient-care models to enhance the quality of their services. Total patient care is a method of delivering nursing care to patients, which involves a registered nurse being held totally accountable and responsible for providing all care received by the patient during their eight-hour shift. The model of total patient care was developed to enhance the cost, convenience, personal qualities and professional competency of the of care providers.... nt care is a method of delivering nursing care to patients, which involves a registered nurse being held totally accountable and responsible for providing all care received by the patient during their eight-hour shift (Fairbrother, Jones & Rivas, 2010). The model of total patient care was developed to enhance the cost, convenience, personnel qualities and professional competency of the of care providers. Care is the nursing attention that nurses provide to patients, including medication administration, meeting the biological needs of patients, and satisfying the psychological needs of the patients. The system of total patient care was developed as an alternative to primary care after the achievement of registering enough nurses to implement primary nursing. The model was developed through team nursing to combat fragmentation of the nursing care. Description of the Total Patient Care Model The model of total patient care is commonly used in Intensive Care Units (ICU) and Postanestheti c Care Units (PACU). Under the model of total patient care, licensed practical or registered nurses replace the nursing team who give total care to a group of patients. The nurse providing care is held accountable and responsible for the health care progress of one patient (Dubois, D'Amour, Tchouaket, Rivard, Clarke & Blais, 2012). The nurse is also responsible for planning, organizing, coordinating, and performing total care to the patients. Total patient care is one of the oldest models; the students of nursing typically performed this model in their vocational training. The registered nurse is responsible for all the care provided to a patient during a specific shift. The standard time for any shift is eight hours. The shifts are organized in such a way that there are three nurses

Experiment #1 North Circumpolar Motion of Stars Lab Report
Experiment #1 North Circumpolar Motion of Stars - Lab Report Example Yes, in addition to the obvious motion that brings about change of location, they also change the orientation. The stars seem to exhibit two kinds of motions that is one from the central position and its orientation It is common knowledge that the earth moves from east, north, west and south. However, such motion is similar to the stars because they appear to move from the north toward the west, comparison of the stars location reveals that those observed in the first experiment appeared far from the west than those observed later on. Yes, stars move across the space, in fact all stars move across the space from one location to another (Craig, 1). The only difference between the motions of the stars with that of the earth is that direction depends on the individual star. As a result, there is no universal direction for the starsââ¬â¢ movement. Different stars move in the different direction either toward or from each other. For instance, if the stars were fixed we would expect the movement of the earth to portray the stars to simulate motion in the opposite direction. As such one would think that the stars move from the north to east and south. However given that both the earth and the stars move in the same direction, it is evident to seek stars changing position. Movement of the stars does not depend on either the seasonal motion of the earth or the daily seasons. Their motion is independent of these parameters. In fact, stars move independently in space. Motions of different stars do not take defined direction as many would expect but rather may move in any direction in the space. Craig, Brown.. Paradox of Thrift Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Paradox of Thrift - Assignment Example This scenario contradicts the individual or household-based argument that saving is good for the economy. In the United States, the Personal Savings Rate (PSR) over the last decade has been increasing and decreasing from time to time depending on the personal savings levels in the economy. The U.S PSR was recorded at 3.40% in December 2011, 5.50% in January 2011, 4.90% in December 2010, 4.50% in December 2009, and 5.70% in December 2008 among others (Yates & Hunter, 2011). This trend can be associated with the performance of the U.S economy at different times of every single year. The spending and saving of a typical American household is guided by the economic potential of the household. This can be held collectively for the entire economy, where the population spends within its financial limits. By observing the PSR trend over the last decade, it is seen that both spending and saving in the economy fluctuate from time to time. Increase in savings directly lowers spending in the economy, and vice versa. Too much savings in the economy lowers total consumption. A typical American household spends more than it saves, but summing up increased savings in the economy can result in the paradox of

Management of Adult or Child with Special Health Needs Case Study
Management of Adult or Child with Special Health Needs - Case Study Example This paper focuses on understanding management of a child or an adult with special health needs, this will be achieved by analyzing history taken from patient, finding on examination and findings, outline the various patientsââ¬â¢ health needs as well as various action taken to overcome matter related to this effect including communication with other agencies and team members. The designed case study will incorporate critical discussion of relevant ethical, legal and professional issues. According to Andre and Velasquez (2010) adults and children with special health needs are a diverse group. They tend to experience health conditions ranging from body pains, hypertension and other physical disorders. Katy (2002) maintains that, among pregnant women level of special need may vary from abdominal pains which are considered normal during pregnancy to lower abdominal pains which are very risky especially in late pregnancy. Clearly, the intensity and type of services required to treat t his ranges from prescribed medicine and regulated exercise (Oredugba and Akindayomi, 2008). Adding to this diversity in cases related to special needs, it is important to connect special health need individual management with relevant ethical, legal and professional issues so as to create a practical example of what take place in that given situation (Katy, 2002). Lower abdominal pain is widely generated from an organ within any organ situated within the stomach area. For instance, these pains can highly originate from colon, liver, small intestines, pancreases, gall bladder and spleen which can produce painful sensations which may vary largely in intensity which can be felt in the lower stomach especially in pregnant women (Christopher and Volpe, 2007). Researchers indicate that whether the pain is restricted to a specific area or those which are localized; it is quite general that it can be a sign of a certain underlying root cause (Herzer, Goebel and Cortina, 2010). The paper enc ompasses a lady who is suffering from lower abdominal pain and who is thirty weeks pregnant with her first child. This lady was identified by her midwife to have abdominal pains which complicated her pregnancy. The midwives attributed that this problem could be as a result of misuse of substance as well as experiencing mental related problems (Shapland, 2006). Although having abdominal pains during pregnancy is a normal experience having lower abdominal pains can be risky and one that requires a lot of attention especially to women having special needs (Christopher and Volpe, 2007). June and Alexandra (2006) maintain that preventing of lower abdominal pain for a lady with special need requires a proper attention. It is important for this lady to be given food whose dietary will assists in treating irritable bowel in connection to managing stress. Christopher and Volpe (2007) maintain that, here are various ways that lower abdominal pains can be diagnosed and be treated in this woman . There are chances that lower abdominal pains during labor in this woman can either result to miscarriage or the miscarriage can be prevented through giving tentative care if the woman health is not put in question (June and Alexandra 2006). Firstly, it is important for health practitioners to carefully observe the pain area, it duration and intensity as well as other
